It was founded in 1764 by Catherine the Great and has been open to the public since 1852. Here is the list of the exhibitions you may visit: Egyptian antiquities, Classical antiquities, Prehistoric art, Jewelry and decorative art, Italian Renaissance, Italian and Spanish fine art, Knight's Hall, Dutch Golden Age and Flemish Baroque, German, British, Swiss and French fine art, Russian art, Neoclassical, Impressionist, and post-Impressionist art. May be you'd rather prefer to see some historical buildings like Saint Isaac's Cathedral or Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral, or may be you'd like to walk down to Nevsky Prospect which functions today as the main thoroughfare in Saint Petersburg and where the majority of the city's shopping and nightlife are located.

By the way, don't miss one of the symbols of St. Petersburg: every night during the navigation period from April to November, 22 bridges across the Neva and main canals are drawn to let ships pass in and out of the Baltic Sea according to a schedule. This is beautiful.
